Collegiate 100 Black Men of Pensacola's First Annual Men's Retreat

The Collegiate 100 Black Men of Pensacola sponsored its First Annual Men's Retreat on the weekend of April 21-23, 2006. The retreat was held at the University of West Florida.  The theme this year was centered on the three important E's of today's society that governs the young Black male's life: Education, Empowerment, and Employment. The focus motto was: "What They See, Is What They'll Be." Through this retreat, the Collegiate 100 had high expectations to empower their audience (males between the ages of 16-29) and equip them with the necessary fundamentals required to ensure their success for a time such as this.

The Collegiate 100 was fortunate to have some outstanding keynote speakers and facilitators throughout the entire retreat. The following speakers were present: Pastor C. Marcel Davis, Dep. Supt. Norman Ross, Mr. Kevin Franklin, and Mr. Ralph Tice, President of the 100 Black Men of Pensacola.  These gentlemen imparted some wonderful things into the minds of those who attended and delivered their messages well.  "The Blueprints", analyzing the Willie Lynch Letters, Education and Why U' Will Fail, Biblical Principals on Wealth and Empowerment, Solutions to the Problem, and White Privilege were some of the topics rendered by our speakers.

The 100 provided lunch and beverages on Saturday, April 22 and also paid for the Collegiate 100 banner, which was displayed prominently throughout the retreat.  We thank the 100 for supporting us in our efforts to educate and empower our young black men of our community. This event was indeed a treat and we look forward to a bigger and better retreat next year.

Durrell Wells,

Collegiate 100 President

Synthia Saint James Commissioned To Design Art Piece For 100 Black Men of America
By 100 Black Men of America
Apr 5, 2006, 14:15

It’s not very often that you find an artist who has the ability to teach herself how to have an eye for detail, how to blaze a path with an immeasurable creative spark, and how to create a masterpiece that can capture the essence of African-American culture. Well, Synthia Saint James is one such artist. One that creates art from the heart.

Because of her numerous accomplishments, Synthia Saint James has been commissioned to design a signature painting for 100 Black Men of America’s 2006 Annual Conference. The piece will be designed in recognition of the 100’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, to be held from June 7-11, 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia. This year’s theme is “Celebrating 20 Years of Legends, Leaders and Legacies.”

A self-taught artist and author, Synthia has blossomed into an internationally renowned artist whose special touch continues to mean so much to so many people. Her work can be found on the covers of over 60 books including those by Alice Walker, Terry McMillan, Iyanla Vanzant and Julia Boyd, among many others.

SYNTHIA SAINT JAMES

“Artwork by Ms. Saint James is known for evoking power and compassion,” says Albert E. Dotson, Jr., Esq., Chairman of the Board for 100 Black Men of America, Inc. “When you look at her artwork, you’ll notice that the stance is looking upward. It signifies power, forward movement and looking to the creator for inspiration. I immediately thought these images were important to the theme of this year’s conference and set out to commission Ms. Saint James to design our original masterpiece.” Since 1990, Synthia Saint James has completed over 50 commissions for major organizations, corporations and individual collectors, including The House of Seagram, Brigitte Matteuzzi’s School of Modern Jazz Ballet (Geneva, Switzerland), the Mark Taper Forum, The Los Angeles Women’s Foundation, Kayser-Roth/Maybelline, Essence Magazine’s 25th Anniversary, The American Library Association, UNICEF, Dance Africa, The Girl Scouts of the USA’s 85th Anniversary, Attorney Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., and the United States Postal Service, who commissioned her to create the first Kwanzaa Stamp.

Saint James’ original masterpiece will be displayed in the 100’s headquarters in Atlanta, along with other original art commissioned by 100 Black Men of America, Inc. Fans are encouraged to purchase autographed prints of the commissioned piece during the Annual Conference in June. Conference attendees are also encouraged to meet and greet Synthia in the Art/Literary Corner which showcases personal appearances from highly regarded authors, and allows them to present excerpts from their work and provide autographed copies of their books. As an added opportunity to interact with Synthia, fans and conference attendees can visit her at her very own booth during the Conference, where she will display some of her favorite pieces from her collection.

The 100 Black Men of America’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, scheduled for June 7-11, 2006 takes place at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center, 100 CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia. It is designed to focus on education and mentorship, as well as the distinctive interests and professional development needs of youth and families. This is a one of a kind event that will salute legends, leaders and the legacy of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. The event also connects America’s youth, conference attendees and the surrounding community with leading entrepreneurs, officials, educators, health-care professionals, clergy, business executives, nonprofit executives and entertainers.
